Artist's Comments

Absolutely beautiful and excessively miserable, this is one of the toughest places to shoot in the world – partly due to heavy rain over 300 days a year. In addition to significant salt-water wind, the Olympic Peninsula sees a unpredictable and rough coastal climate all-year round. Lost a camera here in this spot and other gear affected by such conditions. But I think the result was worth it :)

The ‘fog-like’ effect was attained through the use of a 64x Neutral Density filter with F/22, insuring maximum foreground / background detail, and due to true color neutrality, true saturation.
There was 7-stop difference between foreground / background luminance.

To balance exposure values I used a 2-stop soft ND 51A Tobacco Grad and a 3-stop hard Reverse ND Grad.

Thanks for Critiques and Comments.

Other than the beautiful shot, I love the technical aspects as to how the shot came about. Always a big help to newcomers.

I do have a Cokin creative filter holder already albeit, for some reason, I couldn't seem to find a camera store here in Boston with a wide array of filters such as ND grads and tobacco ones (always have been looking for those) instore. i couldn't even find one with a Cokin circular polarizer for the P-series!

That's interesting! Now the tobacco and ND filters that you mentioned using, are they the square ones from Cokin as well?

Square (glass) yes, but not Cokin.
